The written element of my portfolio fits on 22 sheets of toilet roll, meticulously fed through a typewriter and hand typed. The purpose of this expects and demands the artist and the audience to engage with an act of endurance, whether it is through typing or reading. This experience aligns with the difficulties faced in the performances and struggles of those living in poverty.
In the UK toilet roll is a household essential; many of us will never be able to understand the privilege of basic household essentials until we cannot afford them.
The toilet roll also provides an unconventional and delicate space to discuss the development of my new series of works over the semester, and the challenging effects of austerity on those in need.
